Immigrant Rights Demonstration, April 10, 2006

Today there was a huge demonstration march in Boston to support the rights of illegal immigrants. There were a surprising amount of people involved. I think these types of of demonstrations have been happening all over the country recently but the one here was huge. There were at least 7,000 people marching, maybe more. They were all organized by country and were all chanting “Si Se Puede” (“Yes We Can” in Spanish).

I took some photos with my camera phone above, the view is from my office window. They didn’t turn out all that well but you get the idea.

I watched them for a long time as they paraded down the street. They were chanting and shouting very loudly. The collective voice faded in and out, it sounded like a haunted gust of wind. The roar permeated every corner of my office for about an hour. It made me shiver.

Mob mentality is scary. I guess that’s the idea.
