Sin City Xmas Vs Saguaro Holiday [Cactus Wins]

Last night, Andrea, Nicky, Kevin & I spent the evening together. First we made Christmas cookies. I have a video about that process in the making.

Afterward, the four of us drove out to the Gift of Lights, a drive-thru Christmas light extravaganza in Las Vegas. Basically, it consisted of some rather bizarre light displays, in conjunction with about twenty five light displays that were local company logos. I guess the commercialism is to be expected, after all, this IS Las Vegas. But with that I expected the lights to be much more extravagant, because, after all this IS Las Vegas.

Perhaps the most interesting was the first piece on the display, which was a triptych of gruesome holiday horror that included a Christmas ambulance, which had “just arrived” on the scene, where two elves were carrying an almost dead reindeer into a barn/clinic, all cheesily rendered in Christmas lights.

There were several advertisments in the form of displays as well: we saw: Port of Subs, UPS, NBC, US Bank, Las Vegas McCarran Int’l Airport, among others. Then of course, there were your typical Elvis, Liberace and Viva Las Vegas signs.

The last exhibit was perhaps the most amusing; it was a Santa Clause figure next to a sigh that said “HO HO HO, NO NO NO Don’t Drink and Drive or You’ll Get a DUI”. I had to assume that Santa, the lush, was speaking from experience.

Afterwards, we drove over to the Ethel M. Chocolate Factory, that also has a Botanical Cactus Garden that was covered in Christmas lights as well. The cacti were were spectacular. Also, they had a Santa throne that we sat in, as well as some oversized Xmas novelties.

Although the drive-thru Gift of Lights had some kitch and humor value, the Cactus Garden ended up being much more enchanting and lovely. It was the first time I had seen that many varieties of cactus in one place. I hope to go back again next year!
